
Amara Murphy is a black, queer photographer based out of Detroit, Michigan who specializes in editorial and documentary-style portrait photography. She is in her senior year of her BFA in photography at Wayne State University. She got her start as a street photographer documenting life growing up as a child in Oklahoma. She comes from a lineage of artists and creatives. Her documentary work seeks to delve into spaces between memory and community. Her pieces highlight places that are overlooked or have a cultural significance. Her editorial look varies from simple portraiture to more conceptual pieces. For her, photography has been a way to connect with people and capture the human experience through her work and her processes. She also enjoys getting inspiration from nature and creating pieces that preserve its transient state. Her medium consists of digital and analog photography which she uses to tell stories and evoke emotions through her work.
